Prince Monyo Mihailescu-Nasturel, born in Romania and the last descendant to a line of kings, creates his works of art using either a highly polished or a rough textured design. MAKER: Signed MONYO 4/7. Prince Monyo Mihailescu-Nasturel (b. 1926; Romanian). Monyo was raised in a castle outside of Bucharest, the last in a line of descendants of Romanian Kings and graduated from Sorbonne in Paris with a doctorate degree in ancient history and religion. His family fled to the United States in 1948 when the Communist regime took over, but Monyo thought that, as the owner of a factory producing nails and wire for his country, he was too essential to be bothered by the regime. He was imprisoned for seven years, and upon his release in the early 1960s he fled to join his family in the United States. It was during his time in prison that his artistic ability in sculpture began to emerge. When vacationing in Mexico City, he met renowned artists Alex Duval and Rufino Tamayo, and was asked to share a studio with Duval. His works have been on exhibit in museums all over the world and are in exquisite private collections.

SIZE: This life-size bronze measures 66 1/2 inches tall x 17 1/2 inches wide at the elbows. It measures 16 inches from front to back, and the base measures 17 1/2 inches in diameter. This is a very heavy piece.
