Available here for your consideration is a modern version of a Spanish colonial saddle from the late 1700s period. This vaquero saddle was hand built several years ago by cowboy historian, Lee Anderson. It played an important part in his mounted living history presentations concerning the Spanish Colonial Vaquero. It is museum quality and accurate in amazing detail as described in Jo Mora's highly acclaimed and historically accurate book, "Californios". A saddle like this would have been owned and ridden by someone of high social standing. It is complete with the anquera (flanker) covering the horse's hindquarters as well as the anquerita (small anquera) attached behind the cantle. The large, intricately tooled and removable mochila lays over a rawhide covered tree. The sword is a replica but accurate in design also and it comes with a grass reata. The walnut stirrups are hand carved with Hapsburg eagle heads and a floral design matching the tooling in the leather of the mochila slightly below and behind the pommel. The cincha rings were handmade and hammer welded by the blacksmith at Pioneer Living History Village. As was done in that era, there is no sheepskin on the bottom of the tree. Instead, a folded blanket was placed under the saddle. This is truly one of a kind and a rare chance to own a saddle like this as originals are practically non-existent!
