Gaulois No. 3 Palm Gun Pistol, the Gentleman's Self Defense

Posted by Rowdy Olson on Jun 5th 2026

The Gaulois No. 3 is a luxury, "squeeze-fire" palm pistol manufactured in France by Manufrance (Manufacture Française d'Armes et Cycles de St. Etienne) from approximately 1893 to 1912. It was specifically designed as a compact, concealable "hideout" gun for self-defense.

Intended as a discreet tool for personal protection during the Belle Époque, its mechanical design is distinct from traditional handguns as it is operated by compressing a lever in the palm of the hand.

Manufrance produced the Gaulois in several grades. While the No. 1 was a plain utility model, the No. 3 was a high-grade version was often characterized by its ornate scrollwork and high-quality finish compared to more utilitarian versions, serving as a notable example of the era's craftsmanship.

This gun, which sold in our May 2026 auction, is the No. 3 version. It features a flat profile, fixed barrel and a nicely engraved metal body. It is accompanied with a wooden display box and a little gun oil bottle (metal). It fires a proprietary 8 mm black powder cartridge.

Today, these pistols are highly sought after by collectors of oddities and "curio and relic" firearms. A well-preserved No. 3 with its original "coin purse" style leather holster or fitted case like this is considered a significant find.
