DESCRIPTION: For your consideration here is a great old spade bit by Raphael (Filo) Gutierrez. It has classic Gutierrez engraving and the original rein chains. Gutierrez was born in Northern California, by age 16 Gutierrez was working as a bit and spur maker in Sacramento California with Bernard Valenzuela before joining GS Garcia in Elko, NV in 1911 where he is credited with the production of some of Garcia's finest work. Filo returned to Northern California in 1920  where he joined Juan Estrada. Gutierrez made bits and spurs for Hamley, Olsen-Nolte, Fred Stern and GS Garcia in addition to his own maker-mark.

MAKER: Marked with a small F on the inside of the cheek, towards the bottom near the rein ring. This is one of the marks of Raphael (Filo) Gutierrez (1889-1958).

APPROX AGE: Early to mid-1900s.

SIZE: It has a 5 inch mouth piece and is 8 inches long overall.
